WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botulinum Toxin type A(BTXA) is a substance which is used in many fields of medicine. It works only by relaxing overactive muscles. BTXA is a prescription only medicine and can only be injected by a licensed health care professional, doctor or nurse. Virtually all of our patients would present with some form of medical indication. The side effect of relaxing muscle movement can be a smoother complexion. This is how it was discovered to begin with: Patients received BTXA injections around the eyes for a condition called Blepharospasm, involuntary hypercontraction of the muscles we use for squinting. This can cause the eye to virtually shut. After receiving the BTXA treatment the patients muscle relaxed and as a side effect, the lines around the eye, crow’s feet, reduced. The patients demanded for the healthy side to be injected and so the cosmetic BTXA injections developed from there.

WHAT IS BOTOX NOT?
Botox is not an anti-wrinkle treatment that helps to restore a freshness to the face by minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because these wrinkles are mainly caused by muscle contractions and repetitive facial movements, such as squinting or smiling the muscle relaxation can only have an effect if there is real, hyperactive muscle movement. It is therefore very wrong to use BTXA to treat fine lines and wrinkles. This is only the side effect, the real use of BTXA lies in its reduction of hyperactive muscle movement. This goes in hand with frowning, tension headaches, migraines, clenching of the lower jaw and so forth. A patient who does not present with any of those symptoms, even mild, is not a great candidate. We use more BTXA than any other office as most of our patients are treated in the upper and lower face area. The most common problems with jowling, clenching and grinding of the teeth can be treated and alleviated successfully.

PHARMACOLOGY
There are mainly three different Botulinum Toxin A treatments – Botox®,Dysport and Xeomin. Different manufactures have different preparations. We have tried them all over the years and are only using Botox in our office as it is the best, even though also the most expensive of all toxins.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
The procedure is virtually painless, the effects take plus minus 3-14 days to develop. The patients feel an improvement and a reduction of muscle contractions. For instance the hyperactive frown muscle is no longer working uncontrollably and tension, headaches, migraines, squinting, frowning upon screen work is reduced. In the lower face the strength of the muscles pulling the face down and clenching is minimised and we have a reduction in muscle strength which ultimately reduces facial sagging and lower face volume. BTXA can of course also be injected for excessive sweating in the under arm area.
