Whilst each product in our Urban Protect range is designed to work beautifully in isolation, their anti-ageing, pollution-protecting powers reach their highest when used in partnership with one another.

Here we share how to get optimum results with our ‘six steps to flawless’ skin maintenance regime:

STEP 1
Urban Retreat Foaming Cleanser (Daily)

Packed with anti-oxidant rich Moringa, our luxurious Foaming Cleanser is the first step to clearer skin, day and night.

It gently lifts heavy metals and pollutants from the dermal layers to leave skin clarified and refreshed, whilst enhancing natural radiance.

Massage into dampened skin in a circular motion, from the centre of the face to increase blood flow and encourage cell turnover.

STEP 2
Urban Protect Antioxidant Serum (Daily)

Once skin is cleansed, the next step is a powerful cocktail of antioxidants to boost your skin’s natural defences, brighten, firm and smooth.

Our super lightweight Urban Protect Antioxidant Serum is instantly absorbed and packed with skin protecting nutrients such as high potency Vitamin C which revitalises, helps to correct skin tone, detoxifies and hydrates.

Added rice brand oil helps to encourage free radical defences and protects natural collagen, whilst soothing skin irritation, and shielding from further UV damage.   Apply two or three drops from the centre of the face out.

STEP 3
Urban Protect Day Oil (Daily)

The jewel in the crown of our daily pollution defences is our gold-flecked Urban protect Day Oil.  Use it at stage three to lock in the power of the serum, whilst instantly boosting your glow.

The unique formula has an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effect helping to reduce free radical damage and protect collagen. Argan oil works to restore natural moisture levels and energise the skin while Vitamin C reduces skin inflammation, and pure gold encourages rapid cell turnover.

To apply, warm two or three drops in your hands, and stroke into the skin upwards from the throat to the forehead. The result is more luminous, tightened, hydrated and refined skin.

STEP 4
Urban Protect Day Moisturiser and Primer (Daily)

Our Urban Protect Day Moisturiser works like a cashmere veil, shrouding the skin in a lightweight, yet powerful protective layer against harmful pollution.

Hyaluronic Acid plumps fine lines and hydrates from within, Organic Virgin Argan Oil offers protection from free radicals, while the combination of high purity Vitamin C and Zinc Oxide protect and neutralise environmental aggressors.

The protective shield helps ensure a rapid return to skin radiance and promotes a stronger more resilient complexion while offering a perfect priming base for makeup application, without greasiness or shine.

Apply a small amount to the face, neck and décolleté for all-day pollution protection.

STEP 5
Urban Protect Night Oil (Night only in place of the Day Oil)

The Night Oil offers a nutrient packed face oil that delivers the deepest treatment to the skin, supporting rejuvenation throughout the night when the skin restores itself.

Retinol helps boost collagen, reenergising the skin and reducing fine lines. Evening Primrose, Rosehip, Argan Oil and Vitamin E deliver extreme nourishment whilst reducing inflammation and promoting skin radiance.

Apply two or three drops with a gentle skin massage, to bring blood flow to the surface and encourage skin renewal.

STEP 6
Urban Protect Acid Peel Mask (Once or twice a week)

To enhance skin glow, we recommend a once or twice weekly 15-minute session of intensive restoration and renewal with our Acid Peel Mask.

A cooling, lightweight and transformative gel with a unique blend of acid exfoliants Glycolic Complex, Salicylic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, this rejuvenating treatment promises to lift dead skin cells and residual toxins, replacing it with deep level skin hydration.

The result is reduced pigmentation and pore size, and a brighter more even skin tone.

Apply a thin layer then relax as the delicate scent revives your senses while the skin transforming actives work their magic.

To really protect your skin from environmental aggressors, you need to form a barrier.

That barrier should not suffocate the skin beneath, but instead work to hydrate and nourish the deeper dermal layers, whilst shielding exposed areas from free radicals and damage.

Our experience taught us that the best formulation to achieve this delicate balance was oil based. Even if you have greasy or acne-prone skin, a skin oil will help maintain hydration, inhibiting the over-production of sebum and bringing more balance to the skin’s texture and appearance.

If your concern is signs of ageing, facial oils are particularly apposite.  As we get older, we produce less of the essential oils we need to keep our skin looking plump, fresh and nourished.  The result is areas of thinner looking skin, dryness, irritation and lines and wrinkles. This can start as early as your mid-twenties.

The answer is to look for an oil with small molecules; good candidates are Argan and Squalene, which are big enough to provide surface cover, whilst being small enough to offer deeper hydration to the skin.

Argan oil is prized for its ability to provide moisture to the skin as well as being rich in vitamin E and specific acids that work to protect the skin from free-radicals and the signs of ageing caused by environmental damage. It provides a light barrier to attacks from pollutants with larger molecules that damage the skins natural protective barriers.

It’s not just a pretty face, how your oil is packaged matters. Ours is housed in a dark violet bottle, which far from being just an aesthetic choice, is critical to preserve the integrity of our blend.  Exposure to light or heat can damage the oil and reduce the efficacy of the active ingredients.

Finally check your oil’s ingredients.  Anything that has water in the first few ingredients (listed as Aqua) will be diluted and difficult to get any real benefit from.

Oils for Day

The daytimes are when our production of sebum's and oils are at their most active so you need additional ingredients that work with the natural oils to maximise the benefits to your skin throughout the day. Urban Protect Day Oil is the jewel in the crown of our daily range, due to its unique blend of actives.

Firstly, we maximise the benefits of the anti-oxidants in the Argan oil we use, with the inclusion of Vitamin C and pure Gold Flakes.

For daytime use, the Vitamin C works to increase levels of Vitamin E and anti-oxidants vital in tackling environmental aggressors.  It also inhibits the production of too much melanin, so is ideal in the treatment of discolouration.  Finally, it’s an antioxidant, working to fight free radicals and protecting your skin from further damage.

Secondly, as shared in our piece Pure Gold: Why This Precious Metal is a Skincare Miracle, the Gold Flakes are there for much more than decorative purposes. Gold has been found to promote an electron transfer in the skin system, leading to improved blood flow and increased nourishment.  It effectively works as a coat of armour to deflect environmental aggressors and allow the skin to focus on healing itself. This protection allows a fast return to healthy turnover, leaving it looking younger and with an improved glow.

Oils for Night

During the night, your skin does its best work rejuvenating itself and cell turnover is maximised, so dead skin cells are discarded.  This makes it the ultimate time to take advantage of exfoliating ingredients like Glycolic Acids and Retinoids.

However, it’s also when sebum production is at its lowest, and your skin loses more water, in a process called trans epidermal moisture loss, partly because we’re naturally hotter at night, and so a deeply nourishing moisturiser is crucial.

As we rest, we also hope that our cortisol – stress - levels drop. Skin that is less stressed is more receptive to the benefits of active ingredients and recovery from the day’s challenges, and the ingredients in your night oil should be reflective of that. By choosing purifying and actively soothing ingredients you minimise inflammatory skin reactions that cause signs of ageing and conditions like acne and rosacea.

Like our day oil, Urban Protect Night Oil is made with low molecular sized Argan Oil, but with the inclusion of a next generation Retinol to encourage cell turnover and reduce fine lines. Evening Primrose soothes inflammation and works to settle skin stress, while Rosehip and Vitamin tackle discolouration, puffiness, and help eradicate lingering pollutants from the day.

When we talk about pollution, it’s reasonable to assume that we’re talking about the outdoor environment.

Research suggests though, that in urban environments where we spend up to 90% of our time, our skin is vulnerable to growing levels of indoor air pollutants (IAPs).

As we’ve increased the efficiency of our homes, to avoid wasting energy, we’ve increased our risks of being exposed to toxic amounts of ‘off-gassing’ or the release of toxic gasses and molecules from otherwise harmless household products.

Classified as the ‘degradation of air quality by pollutions’ IAP’s are a massive issue in the fight against premature ageing caused by environmental aggressors.

Anyone who visits our Beauchamp Place Clinic will testify to the purity of the air as a result of our research around this.

Outdoors we have smog, ozone damage, heavy metal residues petrol fumes to contend with. Inside, the list is easily as long and complex:

Biological contaminants:

This list includes dead skin cells, parts of insects, viruses (like the cold), pet residues, mildew, mould and bacteria. All of which can cause irritation, dehydration, congestion, infection and inflammation if left on the surface of the skin for too long.

Dust:

Most dust seems innocuous to skin, but dusts from wood, asbestos, flour, grains and silica (building materials) left to sit on the surface of the skin can cause irritation and symptoms of dermatitis.

Tobacco smoke (ETS) or second-hand smoke:

This is an obvious one, but cigarettes are an absolute skin no. Exposure to tobacco particles can cause extremely rapid skin deterioration and ageing.  More than 80% of second-hand smoke is invisible to the naked eye, and the chemicals from one cigarette will linger on clothes and in a room for up to three hours.  These residues are absorbed through the skin’s membranes and can lead to inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles, discolouration and increased sensitivity.

Fine particulate matter (PM)

Residues from wood and coal fires, wood burning stoves and alternative heating sources can be a major culprit for skin irritation and dehydration, leading to increased lines and hypersensitivity.

Nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2)

Nitrogen oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are products of gas and coal residues not burning properly.  Sources include ovens and stoves and they can cause irritation and oversensitivity over time.

Pesticides

Research indicates low levels of pesticides are present in the air of most western homes.  This can be the results of using pesticides, such as weed killers, and/or by contaminated dust, dirt and air entering the home from outside.

Pesticides can penetrate deep into the cellular level of the skin, altering its fundamental DNA composition. They compromise the skin’s natural defences leaving it at higher risk of sun damage.  Longer-term exposure can also lead to irritation, inflammation and discolouration.

Formaldehyde

This chemical is used in flooring, carpets, upholstery and curtains. Whilst we all make a small amount just by being humans, in large amounts it’s easily absorbed the skin and lungs making it highly dangerous to humans.   Exposure causes allergic dermatitis, surface burning and inflammation.

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)

These are organic chemicals containing carbon that vaporize at room temperature. In high concentrations, VOCs are very damaging to skin. They are up to 10x more present inside your home then they are outside, where they can disperse easily.

Common sources include candles, nail polish removers, mothballs and clothing deodorisers, glass cleaners, dishwasher detergents, alcoholic beverages, laundry detergent, paint, wood polish, aerosol deodorants, air fresheners and hair spray. The National Library of Medicine suggests that amongst other health complaints VOCs contribute to atopic dermatitis and eczema, rapid skin ageing and pigmentation.

The key to managing these environmental aggressors is in the use of a good barrier method on the surface of the skin.  Urban Protect Day Oil, £225 (link) combines Argan Oil to shield the surface of the skin whilst nourishing the lower dermal layers.  The pure gold flakes work to ionise the skin and encourage cell turnover, while Vitamin C supports the skin’s natural defences from attack.

It’s long been believed that the number one contributor to premature skin ageing is from UV rays.  Whilst it’s certainly true that the sun’s rays contribute to skin damage and even skin cancers, it’s only part of the story.

During his 20-years treating age related skin conditions, our founder, Dr Michael Prager noted that many of his clients were showing signs of damage thought typical of sun exposure.  These clients were from all over the globe, exposed to different levels of UV rays and most, if not all, took precautions like covering up and wearing sun block when outside.  The damage was less localised and not the result of overexposure.

Dr Prager realised that there were other factors at play causing the premature ageing they were experiencing and started to explore what the real culprit might be.

At the same time, several highly prestigious institutes, including the Journal of Investigative Dermatology and WHO (The World Health Organisation) had started intense research into the effects of environmental pollution on the skin.

Interestingly, all concluded that environmental influences are responsible for up to 90% of skin damage.

As explained in our article ‘Protection from Pollution: Why it’s Your Number One Skin Priority' when your skin is attacked by pollutants, it’s delicate bacterial balance changes for the benefit of harmful bacteria.

It also puts strain on the ability of your skin to create enough antioxidants to fight the attack, causing stress at a cellular level. Many of these pollutants have molecules up to 20% smaller than your skin, meaning they can be absorbed by the deeper dermal layers, resulting in the deterioration of the skin’s appearance.

Some pollutant particles, most prevalent in smog, are too big to penetrate the skin but can do significant damage to the skin's barrier function.  A 2017 study showed that Vitamin E in the sebum is seriously inhibited in polluted environments, affecting the skin’s barrier. Hyperpigmentation is another a key indicator of pollution damage, as proven in a German study which demonstrated a 22% increase in women exposed to pollution with controlled UV exposure.

Pollution also disturbs the skin’s ability to produce collagen (which helps it maintain elasticity as we age), it’s lipid balance and PH, as well as encouraging it to secrete more sebum (not good for those with acne or oilier skins).  It can penetrate deep into the skin’s surface, leaving it irritated, dehydrated and unable to repair itself, showing lines and uneven texture far faster than in a ‘clean’ environment - with or without additional UV damage.

The fact is, damage caused by pollution is far easier to be exposed to than UV damage. By 2030 an estimated 92.2% of us will live in areas defined as urban. This means being regularly exposed to a cocktail of soot, acid and microparticles from the burning of fossil fuels to power cars and machinery.

Protecting yourself is doubly difficult when you realise that unlike that from the sun, we also face pollution damage in our internal environments.

Of course, we’re not saying to disregard the risks of the sun entirely, and you can read more about our recommendations here.

We absolutely believe though, that time will show the need to protect our skin from pollution is not only desirable but essential for our long-term health and wellbeing.

If you want to transform the look of ageing skin fast, any dermatologist will tell you there’s one skincare ingredient you need; Retinol.

Retinol is derived from Vitamin A, a key component of the skin’s molecular structure. Back in the 1970s it was noticed that acne patients trialling Tretinoin, a stronger type of retinoid, not only benefitted from reduced breakouts and scarring, but their skin appeared remarkably line-free and glowing.

Scientists realised that Vitamin A had the power to alter the skin’s DNA, reversing the signs of ageing.

Not all Vitamin A-based products are created equally, so it’s important to understand which your skin needs and how to get the best results.

The common beauty terms for Vitamin A are Retinol, Retinoids and Retinyl Esters. Simplistically they all deliver the active ingredient Retinoic Acid, but the difference is in the potency – the relative strength and speed with which they act.

In order of strength, prescription Retinoids contain the highest concentrations of Retinoic Acid which is ready for immediate use by the skin. Next, and available in cosmetic formulations is Retinol, which works in a similar way but is processed by the skin more slowly. And then the Esters, commonly called ‘Pro-Retinols’ which are much slower and weaker in action as it takes more time for the skin to convert these actives into Retinoic Acid.

Theywork by encouraging the rapid increase of cell turnover, revealing new cell growth underneath. They support the longevity of collagen (the building blocks of elasticity in the skin) and thicken the deeper layer of skin where wrinkles get their start.

Over time fine lines and wrinkles are softened and the skin looks plumper and more radiant.

How high is too high?

Retinol formulations usually come in fluid form and range in concentration from 0.025% - 0.1%. Whilst some brands go as high as 2%, this is rarely advisable.  Whilst you may see marginally faster results from a higher formulation, you also strip the skin and lead to a condition professionals call ‘over-exfoliation’. Too high a dose can thin the skin, leaving it exposed to increased pollution damage and sun sensitivity which will ultimately age it faster.

Next Generation Retinols

The latest Retinols harness the benefits of time-release delivery systems, ideal for those with sensitive skins (up to 60% of us) as you avoid a big hit of the formula all at once and reduce the inflammation risk.

When you apply a Retinol is also important. Dr Prager recommends a night-time application for several reasons.  Sunlight damages active Retinol so daytime use is less effective, it can also cause a reaction with the skin leading to increased sun sensitivity.  The skin’s repair processes are also most intensive during the night, so the active ingredients work their hardest whilst you’re sleeping.

Our Urban Protect Night Oil is a gentle formulation with encapsulated Retinol at 0.1%. As well as being slow released to the skin to prevent irritation, this anti-ageing powerhouse is blended with Organic Virgin Argan Oil, Evening Primrose and Rosehip Oil offering soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, powerful anti-oxidants Vitamin E and Raspberry Seed Oil work to protect the skin against future damage.

If there’s one product in the Urban Protect Skincare line that gets people talking, it’s our Day Oil.

It’s an exquisite face oil, beautifully light and luxurious, which instantly illuminates with pure gold flakes.

We’re often asked though, why Gold?

The assumption is sometimes for impact, and whilst it is visually beautiful, the gold is a critical ingredient.

Almost every race throughout history has coveted this precious metal for jewellery, currency and as a statement of wealth.  It’s also been prized as a skincare ingredient since the ancient Egyptians, when Cleopatra was reputed to sleep in a pure gold mask.

Queens and princesses throughout the ages have used flecks of gold in their skincare to aid their glow and maintain their royal visage, but it’s only recently that we’ve started to understand its clinical benefits:

Improves Cell Turnover:

Gold promotes an electron transfer between itself and the metal ions in your skin to stimulate your vascular system, leading to improved circulation.

This increase in blood flow brings nourishment to the skin and removes waste more efficiently, leading to faster cell turnover and a visibly fresher complexion

Reduces Signs of Inflammation:

One of the key signs of pollution-led skin damage is inflammation.  Gold is an anti-inflammatory that reduces the signs of stress on the skin and eases reactions to toxins. It’s especially effective at targeting micro-damage in those with redness, acne scarring, rosacea and sunburn.

Protects Against Free Radicals:

Environmental pollution leads to constant attacks from free radicals on the skin’s dermal layers, which end up depleted of anti-oxidants as it tries to defend itself.

Gold works effectively as a coat of armour to deflect the attacks and allow the skin to focus on healing itself.

Slows the Ageing Process:

By providing consistent protection, the skin can focus on replenishment and rejuvenation. It rapidly returns to healthy turnover and production processes, leaving it looking younger and with an improved glow.

Treats Sun Damage:

When you get a colour in the sunshine, it means that melanin has flooded the surface of the skin, which has been damaged.  Gold can help to slow the production of melanin and reverse the signs of damage as a result.

What You Need to Know:

Some skincare brands offer their gold as ‘Nano-particles’.  As you can read in this article (link to SPF piece) we avoid the use of these micro-particles in our skincare.

This is because there is significant evidence that any product with particles that penetrate beneath the surface of the skin may lead to a toxic build-up.  The formulations they have the be suspended in can also be allergenic and irritating.

Instead, we’ve combined pure gold flakes with brightening and tone-correcting potent Vitamin C and restorative Argan Oil. This combination acts as a sealant against pollutants letting the gold do its protective work most effectively.

"If I wouldn’t put it on my children, I won’t recommend it to my clients."

Dr Michael Prager.

That’s a bold statement for any skincare professional to make, but it’s an especially challenging stance coming from the leading specialist in skin rejuvenation treatments in Europe.

Traditionally we’re told that the best way to keep our skin young and fresh is to ensure we use the highest possible SPFs to protect it from harmful sun rays.

But in direct contrast to this, increasingly scientists and skin experts are becoming aware that high SPF skincare comes with as many risks as it claims to prevent.  Clearly, it’s important to stay safe in the sun, but here’s why our experience suggests that high SPFs may not be the right way to do that:

  1. They can be misleading:

It would make sense to assume that a factor 50 sunblock would offer double the level of protection of a factor 25 sun protection cream, right?  Wrong.

The extra protection is negligible.  SPF 15 protects against around 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 protects against 97 percent, and SPF 50 offers around 98 percent.  If you go towards SPF 100, there is only 1% difference, with 99% protection if used correctly.

  1. They can lead to risky behaviours:

In an EWG report on sunscreen efficacy, it was shared that Philippe Autier, a scientist formerly with the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, has conducted numerous studies on sunbathers and found that high-SPF products spur ‘profound changes in sun behaviour’ that may account for the increased melanoma risk found in some studies.

It simply isn’t true that you can stay in the sun 50 times longer after using an SPF 50, but few people realise this.  They then expose skins for far too long, incurring sun damage despite using a high factor.

  1. They’re easy to use incorrectly:

SPF is only as effective as the application.  You can have the highest SPF in the world, but if you don’t apply enough, often enough, it won’t be effective.

Studies show that we tend to only apply 25-50% of the amount we need for the coverage shown on the bottle. That means that if we used an SPF 30 for example, we could be getting less than SPF 10.

To get it right, use a 50p sized dollop for your face and as much as an egg cup full on your body.  One 250ml bottle should barely be enough to last a week on holiday for one person.

Despite global awareness about sun exposure, and the advice to use sunscreen whenever we go outside, diagnosis of melanomas and other skin cancers continue to rise by 4.2% annually according to clinical research – with many professionals citing misuse as a potential cause.

  1. They carry their own health risks:

Chemical sunscreens usually include combinations of chemicals that aren’t necessarily great for our skins, including Avobenzone, which is used to absorb UVA rays and Homosalate (known to disrupt our hormone systems). Many of these can cross the skin barriers into skin and other tissue, which can lead reactions to the chemical compositions of the cream.

They can often also contain Nano-particles.  Put simply, these are very small particles in cosmetics, that can penetrate the lowest layers of the skins surface and be absorbed by the blood stream.  Whilst some studies claim they are safe, many suggest that there simply isn’t enough awareness of what they are capable of to suggest they are suitable for use.

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide lotions are the most popular choices for a sun cream, which work by totally blocking light particles.  Smaller particles are preferred because they give the finished sun cream a clear finish, but the larger particles, which show as a white cream on the skin, offer better UVA protection.

To combat this issue, we use non-Nano particles in our formulations.

  1. They can lead to Vitamin D deficiency

Sunscreens that work by blocking the sun’s rays also block the body’s ability to create vitamin D.

It is suggested that up to 75% of us are deficient in vitamin D, and there’s been a huge rise in the incidence of once-eradicated illnesses like Rickets as a result.  Lack of vitamin D has also been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and various cancers, as well as bone disorders.

Urban Protect uses non-nano sun protectors in its skincare and advises that you use safe sun wisdom to maximise your protection.  Stay out of the hottest part of the day, don’t encourage the skin to burn in the hope of getting a tan and cover up extremities and especially the chest and feet when in the sun.

90%.

That’s how much skin damage we used to believe was caused by the sun. However, intense research by the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, amongst others, is now showing that damage from pollution is just detrimental to the health of our skin.

90% is also the number of us living globally in an area that does not comply with WHO air quality guidelines.  Levels of air pollutants are constantly increasing, causing major health and skin-related problems.

By 2030 92.2% of us will live in an urban environment.

Whether you love urban living or prefer the slower pace of life in the country, in little more than one decade you won’t have much of a choice. And that means that almost all of us are affected by skin damage caused by the pollution threatening to overwhelm our planet.

The Environmental Pollutants Affecting Skin:

When you are outdoors you can be exposed to soot, acid and microparticles from the burning of fossil fuels to power cars and machinery. Indoor air quality can also be a problem, as your skin is attacked by carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and VOCs coming from tobacco smoke, paints, varnishes, and air deodorizers. Dust, fungi or pet allergens are all pollutants too.

It may all sound like just another reason to make people worry about their skin, the science behind the statistics is very real.

How Pollutants Attack Your Skin:

When attacked by pollutants, your skin’s microbiome – or it’s delicate bacterial balance - changes for the benefit of harmful bacteria.   It also creates more ‘reactive oxygen species’, which puts strain on the ability of your skin to create enough antioxidants to fight the attack, causing stress at a cellular level.

Many of these pollutants have molecules up to 20% smaller than your skin’s pores, meaning they can be absorbed by the deeper dermal layers, leaving skin sore and damaged under the surface.

Finally, we know that pollution can also disturb the skins ability to produce collagen (which helps it maintain elasticity as we age), it’s lipid balance and PH, as well as encouraging it to secrete more sebum (not good for those with acne or oilier skins).

Our skin is the largest organ in the human body and our first line of defence against outside antagonists like pollution, but constantly fighting to keep the other organs safe comes at a price.

Skin Damage Caused by Pollution:

Constant exposure leaves us struggling with issues such as:

  • Inflammation
  • Irritation
  • Eczema
  • Allergies
  • Dehydration

Skin that is damaged in this way ages far more rapidly than skin that is adequately protected, and we see the results of this in our clinic.  Comparatively young clients present with concerns such as fine lines, uneven texture, soreness, and rough, reddened areas of skin, even if they really look after their skin.

How Urban Protect Prevents Skin Damage from Pollution:

Diet, exercise, hydration and rest are all critically important, but protecting your skin from environmental damage is crucial if you want to maintain skin health and keep the years back for longer.

That’s why dedicated five years of research in developing the Urban Protect anti-pollution skincare range.  We focussed on both preventing future damage with the right use of natural actives and treating existing issues with the most innovative clinical formulations available.

Ingredients such as gold flakes and high strength Vitamin c, suspended in rich, nourishing oils, create an occlusive protective layer against environmental aggressors.

We sourced peptides from naturals such as the Moringa Oleifera seed, which boosts Collagen, reduce fine lines and contains antioxidants that defend the skin from attack.

Finally, we’ve used clinicals like hydrating Hyaluronic Acid, anti-ageing Retinols and texture-transforming AHAs, which improve the look and texture of skin dramatically over time.

Prager Skincare products are 100% vegan and cruelty free, we only use natural fragrances and our products are free from anything chemically harmful, harsh or artificial – no plastics, no parabens, no hormones.

It’s long been known that our changing environment can damage our planet’s ecosystem, but it’s only recently that we’ve begun to understand its devastating impact on our skin.

That understanding is the core value at the heart of the Urban Protect skincare range.  To really appreciate what makes our approach so unique, it’s key that we share what our founder, Dr Michael Prager’s decades of providing clinical facial treatments and procedures has shown him about skin ageing.

A Pioneering Approach

Unlike the traditional approach of treating each area of the face in isolation, Dr Prager developed a non-invasive way to work with the whole facial structure, reducing the signs of ageing without compromising movement.  In this way he could offer a more natural way to turn the clock back.

This multi-award-winning method is now renowned across the industry, revolutionising the way many practitioners manage clinical treatments like Botox. It became startlingly obvious though that many of the signs of ageing he was repairing were unnecessary, and being caused by external damage, rather than part of a natural genetic process.

This means that for most of his clients, if the right skin protection approach was adopted much earlier, the need for interventions could be dramatically reduced.

Many of us have bought into the idea that ageing is caused by sun exposure, and whilst there is some truth to that, evidence suggests that particularly in the UK where sun exposure is largely limited, environmental pollution is as much to blame.

Pollution is changing our skin daily, and not in a good way.  It is ageing faster, looks less radiant and loses definition at a much earlier stage in our lives.  Nowhere is this truer than in our built-up urban areas. This impact can’t be minimised by using SPFs, which we strongly believe can bring their own negative health impact – it needs a radical approach to skin protection to make a difference.

Despite years of searching Dr Prager couldn’t find the right solution in existing products on the market.

Dr Prager is an advocate of skincare based on naturally active, clean ingredients but he also needed clinically effective results to meet both his own high expectations and that of his clients.

There was simply no point in developing yet another ineffective solution; if he wasn’t prepared to put it on his own face, it just wasn’t good enough. It’s taken five years of intense research to create a solution that meets the levels of skin protection he believes need to be met.

Products with Purpose

The result is a curated collection of six skincare essentials.  Each is designed to work not only with each other, but with the challenges of the environment. To treat signs of damage already caused, but also actively protect from further impact.

When it came to the formulations, it was hugely important that we only used the purest, most potent natural ingredients available on the market to ensure the highest quality and maximum efficacy. They are a key part of what is known as ‘The Prager Approach’, bridging the gap between clean skincare and powerful clinical results.

Dear Dr. Prager, I was recently told that my dark circles and wrinkles could be related to not drinking enough water. I drink at least a few cups of tea and decaffeinated soda throughout the day, so I know that I have liquids in me. How much is enough? Marissa
Dear Marissa, Thank you for such a timely email. With the summer months fast approaching and holiday season in full swing, many people will need to increase their water intake and focus much more on hydration than they already do - that is, if they even think about it at all. While I could not locate the exact numbers for those who suffer from chronic dehydration here in the UK, I would be surprised if it were not close to the 75% of Americans who do.  The sad truth is that most of my patients are well-versed in the benefits of topical hydrating agents such as hyaluronic acid, but few pay attention to how much H20 they are putting into their organs (which includes the skin), You mention a few things in your email that I would like to address. First, tea's, even some decaf blends, have some caffeine in them which can lead to dehydration. While caffeine free sodas may not dehydrate you the same way, many are loaded with sugar. When your blood sugar is elevated, it can result in osmotic diuresis. This is when the sugar exits through your kidneys, carrying water out with it and your kidneys are unable to reabsorb the water. Dark circles can be caused by a number of factors and wrinkles are often caused by repetitive movements and the sun, but being that your skin is very much like a sponge that wrinkles up when dry and fills up when hydrated, you can see how not drinking enough water can bring both signs to the surface. Moving beyond the skin, water is essential for our organs to function properly. When they don't, we can experience sleepiness and constipation as well as confusion, muscle cramps, dark circles and a dull complexion. The tell-tale sign you need more water? Dark coloured urine, exhaustion, thirst and even hunger. Finally, I suggest you find some fun ways to keep your water intake where it should be: The summer months is a perfect time to enjoy watermelon, grapes, glasses of water with a slice of lemon, lime or oranges. Happy hydrating! Living in London where the traffic pollution is so heavy, I often tell my clients that graceful ageing must be something they make a considered effort to achieve. There are a number of treatments that will help combat ageing and offer immediate relief from the visual effects, but it is equally important to consider your lifestyle and the way you're treating your body each and every day. Too many people think they can skimp on sleep, eat unhealthfully, drink loads of alcohol and down a smoothie every so often and simply get a bit of filler and botox and they will wake up looking youthful. It simply doesn't work that way; you cannot fool mother nature, no matter how good your practitioner is. It is for this reason that I am so excited about my new project and so determined to bring my clients the best in beauty treatments both in terms of injectables and topical treatments, but also by sharing transparent wellness tips which will allow them to glow naturally and healthfully while enjoying the latest advancements in fillers, botox, lasers and other treatments to look their very best. This week, I would like to encourage all of you to drink a little more water, less alcohol, pay attention to the foods you are eating and take a few moments to meditate in order to lower your cortisol levels. If there is one thing I know for sure, it is that age is inevitable and the way we age has as much to do with how we live as it does the procedures we choose to have. Though I have built my career on offering the best possible treatments with an aesthetic and artful eye, I have always had a passion for combining technology with the power of natural and self-care. This is why I have been working diligently on my upcoming skincare line and why I always discuss the value of healthy lifestyle choices and mindfulness with my patients. I am an advocate for 360 beauty and that means we must acknowledge the importance of releasing negative emotions, limiting alcohol, engaging in positive self-talk, getting proper nutrition and engaging in active practices such as meditation to bring the body and mind into balance. Today, I want to share a few wellness tips with all of you in the hopes you will use them as a reminder that your biological age impacts everything from your mood and ability to repair cells to your immune function and lifespan.

Drink less alcohol and more water.

You don't have to down gallons or push yourself to drink glass-after-glass, but if your only source of liquid comes by way of a vicious cycle of coffee, black tea, soda and alcohol, you're not doing some real damage to your organs- the ones inside of your body and the one covering it. Dehydrated skin looks dry, old and grey and can itch and flake whilst organs are forced to work overtime, unable to flush out toxins and function properly. Do you really want to be moving slowly through your day with dark circles, feeling constipated and confused? Then drink up.

Meditate.

Study-after-study has shown that meditating for 30 minutes a day can aid in the body's ability to repair itself. Additionally, it can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, increase circulation and signals the left side of the prefrontal cortex responsible for triggering happiness.

Stop putting yourself down.

I love to use treatments to help my patients look refreshed, but it always saddens me when someone sits in my chair looking for me to "fix" something. We all have "flaws" and many people spend far too much time amplifying them to the point of anxiety and making a mad rush into a dermatologists chair. Though some doctors might appreciate that kind of fear-to-sale practice, that's not why I am in this business. We all have negative and self-defeating messages that pop into our heads now and then, but if you find yourself battling a  constant stream of internal criticisms, it's time to start working on building your self-acceptance. No treatment will silence an internal bully and a client battling this kind of self-rejection can never enjoy or fully appreciate a treatment as it will never be enough.

Balance your internal and external treatments.

I am always happy to sit with patients and work out a complex 360 programme that includes a proper skincare routine, long-term treatment plan and wellness approach that will keep them looking and feeling great throughout each chapter of their lives. Your Botox should happen every 3-4 months but you should be eating antioxidants, hydrating and finding some kind of movement every day.   Dr. Prager [post_title] => 4 Wellness Hacks To Enhance Any Treatment [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => 4-wellness-hacks-to-enhance-any-treatment-2 [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2019-08-28 13:50:47 [post_modified_gmt] => 2019-08-28 10:50:47 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://drmichaelprager.com/?p=659 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [1] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 653 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2018-02-19 10:21:06 [post_date_gmt] => 2018-02-19 10:21:06 [post_content] => The Prager Cosmetic Clinic introduces Profhilo; a breakthrough anti-wrinkle injectable treatment that boosts the skin's own ability to stay young. No exercise. Yet, remarkably, no more pear shape. How one writer discovered a... Miracle that made me lose 5 inches (for ever!)" When I heard that a fat eliminating treatment called “Fire and Ice” had come to the UK from the US (where it is widely used), I wondered if this might finally be the answer. It didn’t involve knives or needles. There was no down time and minimal risk. Fat reduction of 20-25 per cent was likely but some people had seen up to 40 per cent. Furthermore the treatment promises to tackle not just fat but also skin tone. In other words I’d not only see the inches disappear but also the skin become smoother and tighter. The treatment is, in fact, a combination of two distinct therapies. The first (the ice part), explains Dr Prager, involves killing fat cells by freezing them, a process called cryolipolysis. Because we don’t develop many new fat cells after puberty, the thing which makes us fat is not the production of more fat cells but rather the filling of the ones we already have. If the fat cells aren’t there, they can’t fill up. Cryolipolysis kills fat cells allowing them to be excreted harmlessly from the body while leaving other cells unharmed. You only need one treatment but it takes between one and three months to work. However, continues Dr Prager, as with liposuction, removing fat by freezing it can lead to unattractive dimpling, making cellulite appear worse rather than better. This is where the ‘fire’ part of this new therapy comes in. During this portion of the treatment a device delivering radio frequencies is used to heat the collagen below the skin causing it to tighten and regenerate. While Fire and Ice therapy isn’t surgical, it doesn’t sound pleasant either. Dr Prager says that some people do find cryolipolysis painful and other experience numbness or aching after the procedure. A bit like being bruised. As to which body parts you can have frozen ‘anywhere you can pinch, apart from the breasts.’ My wobbly saddle bags are, he says, perfect candidates for treatment. Currently measuring 41 inches (a 12 at the hip), Dr Prager reckons, with luck, I’ll be looking at loss of at least one dress size. CREDIT: CoolSculpt (freezing) costs from £750 per area but price is based on consultation as several areas may need to be treated. Venus Legacy is priced at £300 per session and for this therapy between 6-8 sessions are recommended. Last year, the Harley Medical Group reported a 150 per cent surge in women having injections in the first two weeks of December. "Many of my clients are coming in not for wrinkle-smoothing, but to look happier – especially during the party season," explains cosmetic specialist Dr Michael Prager. One is Dr Michael Prager, who says a touch of Botox can also help ease a gummy smile. ‘All it takes,’ he explains, ‘is a 10-second tweak: two injections either side of the nostrils will relax the muscles that lift the top lip,’ he explains. Another popular smile hotspot, says Dr Prager, is the crease between the bottom lip and chin. ‘As we age, this crease deepens, which can make the jawline appear square as the chin starts to get lost. A tiny bit of filler in this area lengthens the chin, to reinstate a more youthful point. It also helps lift the corners of the bottom lip, for a more cheerful smile.’ Read the full article - telegraph.co.uk [post_title] => The teeth-tweakments that will make you look instantly younger [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => the-teeth-tweakments-that-will-make-you-look-instantly-younger [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2019-08-28 13:54:28 [post_modified_gmt] => 2019-08-28 10:54:28 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://drmichaelprager.com/?p=534 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) )

Call it 'tech neck', the result of hours of staring down at phone screens, or call it the raddled throat we earn with age, but many of us will relate to the late Nora Ephron's much-loved essay: I Feel Bad About My Neck. My own had gone from being a swan-like, ballerina taut affair to being ringed like an ancient tree trunk, with an increasingly flabby, jowl-heavy jaw above. Jaw-clenchers such as myself are particularly prone. Step forward Dr Prager and his revolutionary lower-face Botox, in which strategic jabs are used to firm up the drooping jowls and baggy neck that are a giveaway of your age. This treatment is the jewel in the crown of his natural-looking 'work', restoring the face's youthful structure, rather than clumsily freezing the forehead. The aim is to combat the overactive muscle movement that causes slackening, relaxing the muscles that pull the neck down, rendering the jaw line undefined. How it feels He starts with a visual assessment. He gets me to clench my neck and jaw so he can locate the exact spots to inject. I have soon amassed several pinpricks - slightly more on my left side, where the slump is more severe. The results Afterwards, I put some concealer on the pinpricks and go about my business, no downtime whatsoever. One prick turns into a love-bite-style bruise, but is easily disguised with make-up. Ten days later, I utterly adore my new neck: taut, smooth, unlined. As for my jawline - it's as sharp as a young Hollywood heroine's. The effect lasts around nine months. CHEEK LIFT Treatment Dr Michael Prager is a pioneer of the natural-looking 'work' movement, restoring the face's youthful structure via Botox and filler, rather than crudely freezing and bloating. Michael is regarded as the Michelangelo of the needle - his clients look fantastic rather than 'done'. In the past, practitioners used thick, heavy-duty fillers to create the freakish, chipmunk-cheeked effect we are familiar with from Hollywood work gone bad. Prager deploys malleable Juvederm - a dermal filler - to 'pin' the face back on to the bone and give it stability, counter-acting the downward slide we experience with age. How it feels Dr Prager pulls the tissue as he injects, then moulds the Juvederm into place. It doesn't hurt - the only squeal I emitted was one of pure pleasure, as results are instant - and there's no downtime. One minute your face looks tired and drawn; the next, your cheeks are subtly, but beautifully, rounded. The knock-on effects are no less delightful: eye hollows appear less cavernous and the lines around one's mouth soften. Michael recommends having his cheek lift in conjunction with his famed lower-face Botox, which firms jowls and baggy necks for the full rejuvenation effect. The results Words cannot begin to express how much I love my new face. No one guessed what I'd had done, but everyone told me I looked wonderful. Venus Legacy is the superior treatment for tightening the skin, reducing unwanted wrinkles, cellulite, stretch marks and contouring the face, neck and body at maximum depth. This cutting edge treatment requires no downtime, and is painfree. It was recently featured in the Daily Mail. Jilly Johnson came to the clinic to try it and below is an excerpt from the article where she shares her experience: MELT AWAY A FLABBY TUM PROBLEM: My tummy, which had been as flat as a pancake throughout my youth, had developed the most disconcerting wrinkles. It crinkled up like a piece of clingfilm when I sat down. Although I'm slim, I've put on a stone since my modelling days and I'm particularly unhappy with the two Swiss rolls of flab either side of my tummy which developed in my 50s. I usually cover them with kaftans when I'm on the beach, but there's nowhere to hide in a bikini! SOLUTION: Venus Legacy uses heat waves in the form of radiofrequency to tighten skin, as well as gently heating and melting fat. Once the fat is broken down, the body's own drainage system flushes it out, while the combination of heat and suction tightens skin. It's non invasive, there's no downtime or pain, and it's available nationwide. The only downside is that you have to have a course of six treatments. But they last only 15 minutes - so quicker than spending hours doing sit ups! I went to Michael Prager's clinic on London's Wimpole Street, where the therapist pressed a hand-held metal probe against my stomach and muffin top, a relaxing sensation similar to a hot stone massage. RESULT: I was hoping for instant results, but when I checked immediately after my stomach looked the same. Yet by the end of the six weeks, the difference was enormous. I look so much more honed, the muffin top has gone and the skin on my stomach is far tighter - as smooth as it was in my 40s. COST: £300 per session £1500 for a course of 6 sessions Book your course for this highly popular and effective treatment. unnamed (8) [post_title] => Get a beach body with no effort [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => get-a-beach-body-with-no-effort [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2019-08-28 12:30:08 [post_modified_gmt] => 2019-08-28 09:30:08 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://drmichaelprager.com/?p=495 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) )

Journalist Hannah Betts, recently came to the clinic to talk to Dr Prager about using Botox as a solution. Her experiment was a success. She writes: "It's pretty much pain-free, takes seconds and, costing from £495, should last about nine months. Ten days later, with apologies to Nora Ephron, I love my neck: taut, smooth, un-tree-trunked - it is a thing of 18-year-old beauty. I put my first neck selfie on Facebook: 'Necklaces care of Felt London: neck care of Dr Prager.'" Read the full article here! In the article Dr Prager says, 'Both men and women worry about this area - mostly too late,' he sighs. 'Men hide it with a suit and tie. Women have fewer options.' And how do you know if you have tech neck? 'Push your bottom teeth in front of the upper, look at the ceiling and turn your head from left to right as if following the sun from sunrise to sunset. If it hurts, then you know you have to do something about on the onset of tech neck.' To learn more about the effective use of Botox, and how it can help with tech neck, book your consultation today.
