New Year, New Thinking: Mitochondria, Sunlight, Hidden Truths and Hydrogen-Rich Water

Every January, many of us consider a new diet or fitness regime in an effort to safeguard our future health, but instead of reverting back to the same-old, same old, what if we tried a new way of thinking?

What if I told you that much of what we’ve been told about health and wellness over the past decades has been fundamentally flawed? Think about it: what we considered best practise 20 years ago could find us struck off today. And a paradigm shift may be closer than we think as emerging science challenges conventional practises to shed light on the root causes of chronic diseases.

In his 2017 Nourish speech, Dr Jack Kruse – a neurosurgeon with a foot in quantum biology – shared profound insights into the vital role of sunlight, hydrogen, and mitochondria in human health.

Much of what he said some eight years ago is shaping the way we understand wellness today, and this is why I am such an advocate for hydrogen-rich water and sunlight.

The Mitochondrial Connection

Mitochondrial dysfunction is at the heart of many chronic diseases – Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, and more. These microscopic powerhouses in our cells rely on optimal electron flow for repair and regeneration. Hydrogen plays a critical role here, acting as an electron donor to counteract free radical damage and support mitochondrial health.

Hydrogen-rich water, like that provided by my Prager Hydro infusion bottles, is not just a trend. It’s a scientifically backed method to aid mitochondrial repair, potentially reducing the burden of chronic illnesses.

The Sunlight Debate

Dr Kruse also highlighted a shocking truth that “UV avoidance” and excessive use of SPF may be contributing to chronic diseases, not preventing them.

Avoiding sunlight disrupts our natural circadian rhythms, alters brain metabolism, and may even promote overconsumption of food.

Despite increased SPF usage, skin cancer rates have skyrocketed. Could it be that avoiding sunlight has unintended consequences?

Dr Kruse noted, “When people have UV exposure and daylight exposure in the morning, they eat less because it changes the brain metabolism.”

From personal experience, I can only agree. Morning sunlight exposure is essential for regulating your body’s natural rhythms.

While protection is necessary during prolonged exposure, a Vitamin C serum of the quality found in my Urban Protect skincare range, is exactly the kind of protection your skin needs.

The Blue Light Problem

Modern lifestyles dominated by screens and artificial lighting expose us to excessive blue light, disrupting sleep, mood, and overall health. This ‘wrong signal’ compounds the damage caused by sunlight avoidance, leaving our bodies starved of natural light and out of sync with their biological clocks.

As ever, balance is key. Reducing blue light exposure and embracing natural sunlight are crucial steps toward restoring health.

Although I am not saying we all need to stop what we’re doing and follow Dr Kruse, there is a certain power in his words that remind us of the evolving nature of science: “What we do today will likely be considered incorrect in 10-15 years.”

The key is to try and stay open-minded and adaptive by integrating new findings with practical solutions.
