Why I Hate Retinol – And Love the Acid Peel Mask

There is a better alternative to Retinol - the Prager Acid Peel Mask
Ditch the Retinol, Embrace the Acid Peel Mask

Retinol has been touted as a holy grail of skincare, but I have a very different perspective – one based on decades of experience and science.

Let me explain why I’ve never been a fan and why I believe there are better alternatives for achieving radiant, healthy skin.

The Retinol Problem

In the past, retinol (known as Retinova in pharmacies) was available for a few pounds with a prescription. It’s true that using retinol showed a modest increase in skin collagen by a factor of 1.3. However, the side effects far outweigh the benefits: red, sore, flaky skin and extreme light sensitivity. These aren’t minor inconveniences; they’re a sign that your skin barrier is being compromised.

I’ve personally experienced the downside of retinol. After using it and going on a Caribbean holiday, I returned with dark blotches on my forehead. That was the end of my relationship with retinol. While it disperses pigment clusters and stimulates some collagen, it also strips the protective dead cell layer, making your skin vulnerable to damage. This waxen, overly sensitive look is far from what I consider desirable or practical.

The SPF Dilemma

To make matters worse, retinol use essentially binds you to SPF. I’ve always been cautious about chemical SPFs. These products contain free radicals and chemicals whose long-term effects remain uncertain. Interestingly, skin cancer rates were lower a century ago, before the widespread use of SPF. So, it’s worth considering whether our modern approach to skincare is as beneficial as we’re led to believe.

The Rise of Retinol’s Popularity

Over the years, celebrities have promoted retinol as the cornerstone of a minimalist skincare routine, usually pairing it with Vaseline. This combination may work for avoiding sun exposure, but it’s not a practical or healthy choice for those of us who enjoy an active lifestyle. Additionally, Vaseline—a byproduct of the petrochemical industry—is not something I’d ever recommend for your skin.

A Superior Alternative: The Prager Skincare Acid Peel Mask

My alternative to retinol is the Acid Peel Mask, a product developed to replicate the benefits of in-clinic chemical peels. Unlike retinol, the Acid Peel Mask offers:

  • Enhanced skin brightness
  • Increased collagen production
  • Reduced pore size
  • Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
  • Gentle exfoliation

This mask combines carefully selected peeling agents that bleach, kill bacteria, and rejuvenate skin without causing dryness or light sensitivity. Use it on your face, arms, legs, décolleté, and neck for transformative results.

Follow up with my Prager Skincare Night Oil or Day Oil, as well as the Vitamin C Serum, for a complete routine. I promise you, this will deliver brighter, tighter, and healthier skin than any retinol product.

Rethinking Retinol in Skincare

While I include a low concentration of retinol in my Night Oil due to customer demand, I’m reconsidering its necessity. The Acid Peel Mask has proven to be a game-changer, eliminating the need for traditional retinol products. I invite you to try it and experience the difference for yourself.

Retinol may have its advocates, but in my experience, the negatives far outweigh the positives. With the Acid Peel Mask, you can achieve the same benefits without the drawbacks. So, say goodbye to redness, sensitivity, and over-reliance on SPF, and embrace a skincare solution that truly works.
